Will I definitely see a tiger?

Accepted Answer

No — and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. Ranthambore has one of the highest tiger densities in India and sighting rates are genuinely good, particularly between March and June, but this is a wild forest and not a zoo. What we can promise is a private vehicle, a naturalist who knows the terrain, and the full duration of your drive spent looking properly.

How far in advance should I book?

For the winter and spring peak — December through April — we recommend 30 to 60 days. Forest Department permits for the best zones are released on a rolling basis and genuinely do sell out. Outside peak season, a week or two is usually enough, and we can often arrange something at 48 hours' notice.

What makes you different from other Ranthambore operators?

Three things. Every vehicle is private to your party, so you are never sold a seat next to a stranger. Every drive has a Forest-Department-certified naturalist rather than just a driver. And we will tell you honestly when a date, a season or a package is not right for you, even when that means a smaller booking for us.

We quote every experience on request rather than publishing a rate, because the honest figure moves with the season, the zone allocation and the nationality of the guests — Forest Department fees differ for Indian and foreign nationals. Send us your dates and party size and we will come back with an exact quote, usually the same day. No deposit is needed to get one.

When is the best time of year for tiger sightings?

May and June give the highest probability by a clear margin — the forest is dry, water is scarce, and animals concentrate at a handful of waterholes. The trade-off is heat above 40°C. March and April are the sensible compromise: thinning undergrowth, rising sighting odds, tolerable temperatures. December to February is the most comfortable and the best for photography and birding, but the vegetation is thicker.

Which zone is best?

Zones 2, 3 and 4 carry the strongest historical sighting records — they hold the lakes, and the lakes hold the prey. But zone allocation is made by the Forest Department through a computerised system, not by any operator. Anyone guaranteeing you a specific zone is either guessing or misleading you. Every zone in Ranthambore has resident tigers.

Morning or afternoon drive?

Both work, and they are genuinely different. Mornings are cooler, birdlife is at its most active, and the light is better for photography. Afternoons often produce more movement as animals head to water before dusk, and they suit young children better. If you can only do one drive, we would nudge you toward the morning. If you can do two, do both.

How many tigers are in Ranthambore?

The reserve estimate currently sits at roughly 75 adult tigers across 1,334 sq km, which is among the healthiest densities in India. The population recovered substantially after a documented crash in the early 2000s. Numbers are revised with each census, so treat any figure you read anywhere as approximate.

What else might we see?

Leopard, sloth bear, striped hyena, jackal, marsh crocodile, sambar, chital, nilgai, wild boar and chinkara are all present. Ranthambore is also a serious birding destination in its own right, with over 320 recorded species — the rufous treepie, dusky eagle-owl, painted stork and Indian golden oriole among them.

How does the permit system work?

Every core-zone safari requires a Forest Department permit issued against a named guest with valid photo ID. Permits open 90 days in advance and are allocated to zones by a computerised system on the morning of the drive. We handle the entire process for you — you send us ID details, we do the rest.

What ID do I need to carry?

Accepted Answer

Every guest must carry a valid government photo ID — Aadhaar, passport, driving licence or voter ID for Indian nationals, and a passport for foreign nationals. A clear soft copy on your mobile phone is acceptable. The details must match the permit exactly and are verified at the gate.

What is your cancellation policy?

Forest Department permits are non-refundable once issued — that is a park rule, not ours, and it applies to every operator in Ranthambore. Our service component can be cancelled up to 72 hours before your drive for a full refund. We will always tell you exactly what is and is not recoverable before you pay anything.

Can I book at short notice?

Often, yes. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and we will tell you honestly what is available — including when the answer is nothing good. Outside peak season we can frequently arrange a drive within 48 hours.

How do I get to Ranthambore?

Accepted Answer

Sawai Madhopur Junction is the closest railway station, about 10 km from the park gates, and is well connected to Delhi, Jaipur, Agra and Mumbai. Jaipur airport is the nearest at roughly 160 km, about 3 to 3.5 hours by road. Delhi is around 380 km. We can arrange station and airport transfers with your booking.

How many days should I plan?

Two nights and three or four drives is the sweet spot. It gives you multiple zone allocations, buffers against one quiet drive, and leaves time for the fort and the temple. A single overnight with two drives works if time is tight. One drive is a gamble, and we will say so.

Is the park ever closed?

Accepted Answer

The core zones (Zones 1 to 5) close during the monsoon, typically from 1 July to 30 September, for the breeding season. The buffer zones (Zones 6 to 10) generally stay open through those months. Exact dates are set by the Forest Department each year — check with us before booking travel for that window.

Are all safari zones open every day?

Accepted Answer

No — availability rotates on two days of the week. On Tuesdays only Zones 1 to 5 operate, and on Wednesdays only Zones 6 to 10 operate. On every other day, all zones are open. Separately, during the monsoon (usually 1 July to 30 September) the core zones (1 to 5) close while the buffer zones (6 to 10) generally stay open. Zone allocation itself is always made by the Forest Department on the day, so we plan around these rules but cannot guarantee a specific zone.

Is it suitable for children or older travellers?

Yes to both. Gypsies are open-topped but stable, and drives run about three and a half hours on unpaved tracks. For young children we usually suggest the afternoon drive. For guests with mobility concerns, tell us in advance — we will adjust vehicle choice, seating and the fort climb accordingly.

What should I wear and bring?

Muted colours — olive, khaki, brown, grey. Avoid white, bright colours and strong perfume. Winter mornings are genuinely cold in an open vehicle, so bring more layers than you think you need. Also: sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, and a dust cover for camera gear.

Can I use my camera? Are there extra fees?

Yes, and photography is very much encouraged. The Forest Department levies a separate fee for professional video equipment, which is not included in your safari rate. Still cameras and phones carry no additional charge. Drones are prohibited throughout the reserve.

Question 21

Gypsy or canter — which should I choose?

Accepted Answer

A gypsy seats six, sits lower, moves more nimbly and is far better for photography. A canter seats twenty and suits large groups travelling together. Both cover the same zones under the same rules. Our canters are only ever sold as a whole vehicle to one group — we never sell you a seat beside strangers.

What are the safari timings?

Timings shift with the season. Broadly, morning drives depart around 6:00 to 6:30 AM and return by 9:30 to 10:00 AM; afternoon drives depart around 2:30 to 3:00 PM and return at dusk. We confirm exact times the evening before, and pick you up from your hotel in Sawai Madhopur.
