About the place
Critically endangered gharial, Gangetic dolphin and skimmers — on a river boat rather than a forest track.
A tri-state sanctuary on the Chambal, one of the cleanest rivers in India, and a full-day trip from Ranthambore. The draw is the gharial — a critically endangered, fish-eating crocodilian with a population of only a few thousand worldwide, of which the Chambal holds the majority. Alongside them: mugger crocodile, Gangetic river dolphin, Indian skimmer and red-crowned roofed turtle. The boat safari is a completely different register from a forest drive — quiet, slow, and startlingly close to the wildlife.
