About the place
The rail gateway to Ranthambore, with a genuinely good handicraft scene and the country's most famous guava orchards.
Most visitors see Sawai Madhopur as a railway platform and a road out to the gates. It repays a little more attention. The town hosts Dastkar Ranthambore, a craft centre where women from villages displaced by the park's creation now make textiles and block prints — one of the more thoughtful conservation-and-livelihood projects in the country. There is a good local market, the Ranthambore School of Art, whose tiger paintings fund conservation work, and the guava orchards the district is known for across India.
